Today, we raise a glass to the Wine Sisterhood. Founded by triple threat Terry Wheatley, Natalie Wassum and Mary Ann Vangrin, Wine Sisterhood has been stocking wine cellars since 2008. In fact, the company started with its very first case of vino shipped to yours truly—Target.
Sourced from California wine country and bottled in a custom winery in Napa, the Wine Sisterhood wines offer a flavor for every palette—crisp Cabernets, mellow Merlots and perfectly blended Pinot Grigios and Pinot Noirs. The best part? Each wine is based on friends, family, or people the sisters have met along the way.
“The inspiration was to be storytellers through our wine,” says Terry. “We view all of our wine brands as personalities and real people.”
Holding one-on-one conversations with women about wine and the flavors, Terry, Natalie and Mary Ann are all involved in the creation, naming and packaging of the wines, from harvest to bottling.
We’re believers of practicing safe sipping, so if you can’t tell the difference between one bottle and the next, read on. The sisters help us with a delectable food and wine pairing how-to guide below, so you too can be a vino pro.
Middle Sister: Inspired by Natalie Wassum’s middle sister, this wine is meant to bring out the distinct quality of every sandwiched sibling. Sassy, cheeky, sophisticated and edgy, this wine brings out those distinct qualities through its flavors. The most popular Middle Sister wines are Rebel Red (a blend of Zinfandel, Cabarnet and Merlot), Sweet & Sassy Moscato, Drama Queen Pinot Grigio and Goodie Two Shoes Pinot Noir.
Purple Cowboy: When co-founder Terry Wheatley first started in the wine business, the enologists in the lab always talked of cowboys who worked in the vineyards but spent their time in rodeos during weekends. They drank so much red wine it turned their teeth purple, and thus, became known as the Purple Cowboys. Raised on a ranch and married to a professional rodeo cowboy herself (not to mention her professional rodeo cowboy son), it’s no surprise Terry was taken by that story.
“When I was a 20-something-year-old working at a large wine company, I always said someday I’d have my own company and name my first brand, ‘Purple Cowboy’,” recalls Terry. “I sent a bottle of the wine to the only man still alive who told me that story.”
The two styles—Tenacious Red, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and Trail Boss Cabernet—are both from the Paso Robles community. And if that wasn’t enough, Purple Cowboy supports Tough Enough to Wear Pink, a Western breast cancer awareness fundraising campaign founded by Terry, a cancer survivor herself.
Monogamy Cabernet Sauvignon: “There are people who are very loyal to what they drink,” says Terry. “My husband, for example, only drinks Cabernets. We made a joke about how people are monogamous to their wine style.” That’s the story behind Monogamous Cabernet Sauvignon, a single varietal from the North Coast vineyards. Classic Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of black olives, cassis, plum and dried herbs. Completely committed flavors of blackberry, black cherry, cassis and plum with a smooth velvety texture followed by a lingering and slightly toasty finish.
PromisQuous Red Blend: PromisQuous is Monogamy’s alter ego. Named for those who like to shake things up, this wine offers a blend of aromas including ripe red and dark berry fruit, black and white pepper and crème de cassis.
Haute Red Pinot Noir: Nicknamed after the fashionistas in the Wine Sisterhood, this pinot noir was crafted to satisfy the shoe lover in everyone. “The pinot noir is finicky, fussy and very stylish, ” says Terry. Made from grapes from California’s cool pinot noir regions, the wine is sophisticated, approachable, and “of course, always tastes better when enjoyed while wearing a pair of designers shoes.”
