There are dozens of places brides-to-be look to when it’s time to start planning a wedding, from magazines and style guides to an endless array of bridal blogs. But there are two sources of inspiration that have become among the reigning resources on the WWWW (World Wide Web of Weddings): Pinterest and “Style Me Pretty,” the style-savvy bridal blog by Abby Larson. So we thought, why not combine the two?
Abby will bring her expert, editorial eye to Target’s Pinterest page starting May 2– sharing her own obsessions and inspirations for a chic wedding and registry. Below, we chat with the wedding junkie about how she ended up with such a cool gig.
What’s the story behind “Style Me Pretty”?
I have a secret sauce that not everyone knows about—my husband, Tait. Rewind six years ago: we were living in Palo Alto, Calif. while Tait was finishing his masters, and I was on the tail end of selling my wedding invitation business. I wasn’t sure what the greater vision was, but I knew there was space for something that magazines were doing in print, in an online format; a place where brides didn’t have to wait each month for inspiration but could instead devour ideas and resources throughout their day. So I decided to start a wedding blog and a year later, Tait quit his fancy Silicon Valley job and started working for SMP full time, ultimately transforming this idea into something real—something important.
How would you describe your style aesthetic?
I’m classic with a twist. I love tradition… black ties, white gowns and gold tones. But I also think that real classics are best layered with spunk and personality. A shot of pink. A fabulous print. Something that screams “style.”
What do you enjoy most about Pinterest?
It’s beautiful. When I log on to start pinning everyday, I find myself getting completely lost in the imagery, the ideas and all of the gorgeous inspiration.
How has Pinterest changed the way brides plan their wedding?
Pinterest has changed everything. Although what they were doing wasn’t a completely novel idea, they simplified visual inspiration and made it incredibly shareable, useful and beautiful. Now, brides can log on to find more inspiration than they could ever imagine and organize it in a manner to communicate their vision to their vendors. It’s an invaluable tool.
What will you be pinning for Target this season?
I’m going to pin fabulous shower and registry inspiration for four different wedding styles: Prep Chic, Boho Glam, Ladylike and Rustic Beauty. And I’m SO excited because I already have my eye on about a million things.
In your opinion, what makes for a great pin?
A great pin is something that you see and think, “I have to have that.” It could be an amazing recipe or a gown so stunning that you could design your entire wedding around it. A great pin gives you butterflies and makes you want to pop right out of your seat and go make it happen for yourself.
How has Pinterest helped SMP grow?
Pinterest is responsible for delivering a lot of traffic to the site. Since SMP is so incredibly visual, we use Pinterest in an authentic, thoughtful way.
We always ask: What would we find in your Target shopping cart?
Well for one, you’d find me there just about every Saturday. We make it a family trip and the bulk of our buys are tutus and toy cars. I usually sneak a few things in for myself too—like anything from the Nate Berkus collection. The other day I had three of his gold vases, a lamp and two pillows tucked safely inside!
