Celeb host and funnyman Ross Mathews—who first made a name for himself as an intern on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”—celebrated his new book (available beginning May 7) with help from Target. Below, he gives us a firsthand account of his literary launch party.
Last week, my beloved Target threw a party to celebrate my new book, “Man Up!: Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence” and, wow-oh-wow, what a party!
Walking in, I felt like a prom queen… or like Halle Berry when she won an Oscar and freaked the freak out. My face was everywhere—plastered throughout the fancy-schmancy Sunset Tower and accentuated by what seemed like four bazillion pink, white and Target-red balloons. The room was filled with nearly as many celebrities as balloons—Jay Leno, Chelsea Handler, Jackie Collins, Lisa Rinna and beyond.
It was simultaneously too much and exactly right. I might be biased but, in my opinion, it was the greatest party in the history of the world—a fitting celebration for a book that will soon be considered the absolute greatest literary work of art in the history of human kind. Don’t you think?
It seems impossible to narrow down the best moments of the night, but here are a few:
When I first walked in and saw a HUMONGOUS cutout of my face, I couldn’t contain my excitement. If you’ve never experienced a moment like this, I highly suggest that you save up a few bucks, take a picture of yourself and blow it up to the size of a Volkswagen. It’s quite a thrill.
I’m so glad my mom flew down to Los Angeles from Washington State to celebrate the big event because there is no way I could’ve describe it to her properly. My partner Salvador is a wardrobe stylist, so he put her outfit together. Doesn’t she look amazing? By the way, her cute little clutch purse is from Target. Only $12!
The two people most responsible for everything that has ever happened in my career are Jay Leno and Chelsea Handler. They’re like my showbiz fairy godmother and godfather. I was so thrilled and honored that they both came to celebrate the big event.
Jay took the stage at one point and told the crowd of 150 people that he was so proud of me and, if he had ever had a son, he hoped he would’ve had a son just like me. Talk about a compliment! I couldn’t have been more touched, or so I thought. Jay’s next move? He kissed me!
The final highlight of the night—a night with too many highlights to remember—was standing on the red carpet with my partner, Salvador. We’ve been together nearly five years, and he was alongside me every day while I wrote this book. There was a moment right after this picture was taken when he squeezed my hand, looked into my eyes and said, “Enjoy this moment.”
And, oh, how I did.
