Don’t believe what you hear—wearing white after Labor Day is always in style.
One of the most infamous style rules commonly repeated this time of year is “no white after Labor Day.” But before you stash away your favorite jeans or that lightweight lace dress, think again.
Case in point: no one really knows the rule’s origins. Some say it dates back to a time when only the elite were able to escape the hot city for leisurely retreats—light pieces denoted luxury and wealth, while dark clothing signified city life. When it was time to return from “summering” come September, they left white wardrobes at the beach and returned to a darker urban palette. Others say fashion editors just made it up for the sake of telling people what to wear!
Regardless, designers have decided to ignore that so-called fashion faux pas in favor of chic head-to-toe winter whites on the runways, making it easier to wear those light looks year-round. So that got us thinking, what other rules are meant to be broken?
Here are five fashion guidelines that are better left to history—because being rebellious is much more stylish!
Style Rule #1: No White After Labor Day
Head-to-toe white is crisp, clean and makes a statement. A menswear tuxedo-inspired look is a great evening-friendly alternative to all of those little black dresses. Add sparkly earrings, killer heels and a clutch to stand out at your next party.
Style Rule #2: Never Mix Polka Dots and Stripes
Mixing patterns is a big trend both on and off the runways. To keep the look from being overwhelming, keep the color scheme simple—black and white is the easiest but gray and navy can work equally as well. Toy with the scale of each print by choosing a small dotted blazer and wear it over a bolder stripe for a playful look.
Style Rule #3: Black and Navy Don’t Match
Worn together, navy and black offer subtle elegance. Try a textured wool blazer with a tone-on-tone pencil skirt for a polished casual-Friday look worthy of any chic Parisian woman.
Style Rule #4: Florals Are Only For Springtime
With all of the beautiful leaves changing colors in autumn, why should your wardrobe be somber? A darker floral that echoes the deep rich hues of the season is the perfect way to wear pattern this time of year. Add a leather jacket to give it a bit of edge, and finish it off with ankle boots.1. Style Rule #5: Always Wear Gold or Silver, Never Both
Mixing metals lets you maximize your jewelry collection. Keep the stark contrast of yellow gold and silver from looking too harsh by mixing in rose gold pieces as well. Make your own impressive arm stack by choosing different metals but not styles for a unified look.
