Essence-Target-Black-Women-in-Hollywood

Before Hollywood’s leading ladies sat down to honor and celebrate the outstanding achievements of their peers at the 7th annual ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon on Feb. 27, they walked the star-studded red carpet at the Historic Beverly Hills Hotel.

Target Inner Circle blogger and our on-the-ground correspondent Patrice Grell Yursik of Afrobella caught up with Lupita Nyong’o, Tatyana Ali and Nichelle Nichols among others. She even got to chat with Target’s president of Community Relations, Laysha Ward, who later presented a $50,000 donation to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The donation celebrated this year’s honorees.

During the ceremony, one of the brightest moments happened when 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita accepted her award for Breakthrough Artist. During her moving speech, she spoke about her hope to influence young girls, who by seeing her on screens and magazines, may “feel the validation of [their] external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.”
